They say that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, yet the internet has made it possible for people of all ages to learn new skills from the comfort of their own home. The problem that people still face, though, is finding very specific learning courses at a cost that doesn’t break the bank. That is the target audience that Udemy is going after, but do they deliver on what they promise?

What Is Udemy?

 

Udemy has been around since 2007, and is the brainchild of Eren Bali. Simply put, the website is a massive marketplace of online learning courses that cover just about everything under the sun. You can learn the ins and outs of affiliate marketing in once course, whilst learning how to master Photoshop in another. There are currently over 10,000 different courses to choose from, with that number expected to continue growing.

 
The site is incredibly easy to navigate, and it only takes a couple of clicks to find what it is you are looking for. You will have to be specific in order to find what you want, as the basic subjects are very broad. For example, if you want to be a better writer, think about what it is you are hoping to achieve – content creation, novel writing, technical writing, etc. – and try to be specific with your searches.

How Are The Online Courses Taught?

 

There are a number of different means by which the course information is delivered. There are zip files, Power Point presentations, PDF files, video lessons, and more. You may even come across a few courses that offer live video classes. These are particularly good, as they present you with the opportunity to ask questions if there is something that you don’t understand.

 
In short, the classes are delivered in much the same way as they are in traditional online college settings, but there is one major difference. You will not be walking away with a degree of any kind when you finish the courses. What you do come away with is a high quality training that can be used to advance your career, or simply help you learn a new skill that can be used in your own online business.

My Personal Experience at Udemy

 

I had been considering getting involved in affiliate marketing for quite some time when I came across Udemy. I knew that there were a bunch of free materials and resources available to me online, but I also knew that arranging those in a fashion that was clear and made sense would take more time than I was willing to put in. I loved the fact that the Udemy courses were very professionally laid out, and I decided to go with one that featured live video classes, as this allowed me to ask questions as I went along.

 
I was very happy with the course that I chose, but I should issue a word of warning to those of you looking to learn the same subject. When you are searching for the course that you want, you will find that many of them use materials plucked from elsewhere, which is a plagiarism of sorts that is not particularly ethical. That said, I would think that this is a problem that is most likely reserved for affiliate marketing, as it’s harder to do that sort of thing when putting together courses for coding, photography, and other skills.

The instructors get the hang of teaching using this platform, and then move on to premium paid courses, which you can then take, safe in the knowledge that you are going to get a high quality of tuition.

 
==> One thing that I haven’t mentioned to this point is that Udemy is also available for download to your mobile devices, giving you the ability to learn on the go.

 
Cons:

 
==> While my experience with Udemy has been mostly positive, there are some cons that need to be addressed.

 
==> Not all of the courses available are on the up and up, which is why it is so important to choose wisely. Take time to read the reviews on each course before signing up, and also make sure that everything you want to learn is included in the course that you eventually choose.

 
==> The pricing is all over the place, and you may find that some courses are a little out of your reach financially. That said, it is cheaper than going to a traditional school.

There can be no denying that Udemy has a few flaws, but for the most part, this is a great learning platform for people looking to learn specific subjects on a tight budget. I would recommend trying a few of the free courses first, as that will give you an idea of what you can expect when you move on up to the premium courses.
